Establishment and Uniqueness
In 2007, after four years of educational activities and guided tours at Hiriya in collaboration with the Association’s member municipalities and various organizations, the Hiriya Environmental Education Center – “Made in Hiriya” was inaugurated.
The center operates under a unique model in Israel and globally, combining educational and social activities within an active waste management infrastructure site. It serves as the educational and outreach arm of the Dan Region Association for Sanitation, providing an organized and safe visitor experience alongside the operational and control systems of Hiriya Recycling Park.
Historic Building and Innovative Design
The center is housed in a historic building, formerly a compost production facility closed in the 1960s. Its design blends industrial heritage with modern additions, using waste materials, artworks, and unique design elements.
This combination reflects Hiriya’s holistic educational philosophy, integrating sensory and emotional experiences with up-to-date environmental knowledge and sustainable thinking.
Through its structure and activities, the center educates visitors on overconsumption and the environmental impact of excessive waste, while presenting practical solutions that encourage behavioral change and personal responsibility.
Main Areas of Activity
The Hiriya Environmental Education Center operates across five key areas of impact:
1. Visitor Groups: Guided tours of the active park facilities, combined with workshops on creativity, critical thinking, and leadership.
2. Long-term Educational Programs: Collaborations with schools and community organizations in member municipalities.
3. Public Events: Organizing multi-generational, family-friendly events and environmental experiences.
4. Creative Community: Hosting artists, designers, and creators through exhibitions, displays, and art projects.
5. Digital Online Activities: Providing accessible environmental content and knowledge across various online platforms.
Summary
The Hiriya Environmental Education Center – “Made in Hiriya” sets a new standard in connecting environmental infrastructure with community education. It demonstrates how a former waste site can become a hub of inspiration, knowledge, and creativity, leading cultural and awareness change in waste management and consumption habits in Israel.
We look forward to welcoming you to Hiriya Environmental Education Center!
